Are Smart Home Devices Slowing Down Your WiFi?
You've added a dozen smart bulbs, a couple of plugs, a video doorbell, maybe a robot vacuum, and now the WiFi feels slower. The instinct is to blame all those new devices - but the actual mechanism is more specific than "too many gadgets," and worth understanding before you start unplugging things.
It's Rarely Bandwidth
A smart bulb reporting its on/off state, or a sensor pinging a hub every few seconds, sends a trivial amount of data - nowhere close to what a single video stream uses. Individually and even collectively, most smart home devices don't meaningfully compete with streaming or video calls for bandwidth. If your WiFi feels slower since adding them, bandwidth usage is rarely the actual explanation.
The Real Cause: Connection Overhead and Congestion
What does add up is the number of separate, constantly-connected devices your router has to manage. Each one occupies airtime on the shared WiFi radio and consumes a slice of your router's processing capacity for handling connections - even while nearly idle. Older or budget routers can start to show slowdowns with a few dozen always-on IoT devices, not because of what they're sending, but because of how many separate connections need managing at once.
2.4GHz congestion specifically: most smart home devices connect over 2.4GHz rather than 5GHz, for better range through walls. That's also the more crowded band in most homes and neighborhoods, so a large number of IoT devices can add meaningfully to 2.4GHz congestion even while barely touching your actual bandwidth.
How to Check If They're Actually the Cause
Use LAN Scanner to see exactly how many devices are connected and confirm which ones are smart home hardware - the number is often higher than people expect once you count every bulb and sensor individually. Then run Speed Test with everything on, and again with non-essential smart devices temporarily powered off, to see if it makes a measurable difference. What Actually Helps
- Put smart home devices on a separate network if your router supports a guest or IoT-specific SSID - isolates their connection overhead and adds a security benefit, since a compromised smart device then has less direct access to your main devices.
- Check for a firmware update on your router - better handling of many simultaneous low-traffic connections is a common improvement in newer firmware.
