Phishing domains are almost always registered days or weeks before the attack starts, not years in advance. A domain claiming to be your bank's login page that was created last Tuesday is a strong red flag on its own.

A domain's registration history tells you something about its past. A long, continuous history can carry existing reputation and SEO value; a domain that's changed hands repeatedly or was recently dropped and re-registered is worth more scrutiny before you commit.
Identifying Who Owns an IP
When you see an unfamiliar IP in your router logs, a firewall alert, or a connection you don't recognize, an IP lookup tells you which ISP or organization it's associated with - a residential ISP, a cloud provider, a business. This is normal, not evasive: most registrars bundle Whois privacy by default, and after GDPR, registrars became far more conservative about publishing individuals' personal data in a public record. A privacy-shielded result doesn't tell you much either way; a business domain with full public registrant details is more the exception now than the rule.

These two tools are easy to conflate but answer different questions. DNS Lookup resolves a domain into technical records - its IP address, mail servers, TXT records - and answers "where does this domain point?" Whois answers "who registered this domain, and when?"
