PingKit for Students
Dorm WiFi is a shared network you don't control and can't log into. There's no admin panel to check, no router to restart, just you, a slow connection, and a help desk ticket form that asks questions you can't answer yet. PingKit is built for diagnosing from the client side, because that's the only side you have access to.
A few hundred devices on one access point, streaming and gaming and video calls all competing for the same upload during the same evening hours, is a fundamentally different problem than a slow home router. You can't fix campus infrastructure. What you can do is figure out fast whether the problem is your laptop, your room's signal, or the network itself, and show up to Res-Net with numbers instead of "it's been slow all week."
The Tools You'll Reach For
| Situation | PingKit tool |
|---|---|
| "Is it my laptop or the WiFi?" | Smart Diagnostics |
| Signal is weak on one side of the room | WiFi Analyzer |
| Feels slower every night around 9pm | Speed Test, run at different times |
| Seeing what's connected near you | LAN Scanner |
| Writing a help desk ticket that gets taken seriously | Ping Test + Speed Test results |
Start With Smart Diagnostics
Before assuming the network is broken, run Smart Diagnostics. It walks through six checks in order: your network interface, a ping to the gateway, general internet reachability, DNS resolution, an HTTPS connection, and a download speed check. If the gateway ping is fine but DNS resolution is slow, that's a different problem (and a different fix) than if the gateway itself is barely responding. That distinction alone is often more diagnostic information than a whole thread of "anyone else's WiFi down?" posts.
Check Your Room, Not Just Your Laptop
Cinderblock walls, the microwave three rooms over, and forty other 2.4GHz networks on the same floor all degrade signal in ways that have nothing to do with the campus network being "down." WiFi Analyzer gives you a relative Excellent/Good/Fair/Poor signal reading you can check from different spots in your room, useful for figuring out whether moving your desk (or just not sitting in the one dead corner) fixes it. iOS doesn't let any third-party app read the actual WiFi channel or frequency band your access point is using, so PingKit can't tell you to switch channels, that setting lives entirely on infrastructure you don't control anyway.
See What Else Is on the Network (Within Limits)
LAN Scanner sweeps your local subnet for devices. How much it shows you depends entirely on how your campus network is configured: many university networks enable client (AP) isolation deliberately, so students on the same WiFi can't see or reach each other's devices, a real security feature, not a bug in PingKit. If isolation is on, you'll mainly see your own devices and the gateway. If it's off (more common on some smaller or older campus setups), you'll see the fuller picture of what's sharing your segment.
Don't expect to see your roommate's laptop. Client isolation is standard practice on shared institutional networks specifically to stop students from scanning or reaching each other's devices. If LAN Scanner shows you mostly nothing but your own devices, that's the network working as intended, not PingKit failing to find anything.
What to Put in a Help Desk Ticket
"WiFi is slow" gets you a generic troubleshooting email back. A ticket with a timestamp, a gateway ping time, a DNS resolution time, and a download/upload number from Speed Test gets escalated faster, because it's evidence someone else can act on instead of a feeling they have to reproduce themselves. If the same numbers are bad at the same time every evening, say that too; a pattern is more useful to a network admin than a single bad reading.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can PingKit see other students' devices on campus WiFi?
Only if your campus network doesn't enable client isolation, which many do deliberately for security. LAN Scanner shows whatever your device is actually allowed to see on the network, nothing more.
Does PingKit need router admin access?
No. Every tool works entirely from your device's perspective, no login to campus network infrastructure required or possible.
Is PingKit free for students?
Yes. All 19 diagnostic tools, including Smart Diagnostics, WiFi Analyzer, Speed Test, and LAN Scanner, are free with no ads and no account.
